Greetings! As always, there is a lot going on in La Quinta this month, and it’s my pleasure to tell you about some of the special events and public works taking place.
Please mark your calendar now for the City of La Quinta Picnic on April 27th at Civic Center Park celebrating the 37th birthday of our City. This event is free and begins at 9 AM.
Residents are welcome to join us at City Hall for a viewing party to see a video feed from the Public Safety Cameras pilot program. These viewing parties began in March and continue through April at 9 AM Tuesdays and 4 PM Thursdays.
Also free and going on now is a display of murals at La Quinta Public Library. Please see the story later in this issue for details.
Construction has begun on the SilverRock resort and mass grading will be ongoing, which may occasionally impact golf play on our stunning Arnold Palmer Classic Course.
This May we expect to begin construction of the Eisenhower Drive Retention Basin project, which will improve drainage and storm water retention near the intersection of Eisenhower Drive and Avenida Fernando. The basin will collect runoff from the intersections of Eisenhower Drive/Coachella Drive and Eisenhower Drive/Avenida Fernando, and accept overflow from the Legacy Villas development. After the recent rainfall we experienced on Valentine’s Day, I think we all have a renewed appreciation for projects of this kind.
The La Quinta Village Complete Streets project is focused on making roadways safer and more accessible to pedestrians and bicycles in the La Quinta Village. We received $7.3 million in funding for construction through a state grant called the “Active Transportation Program” and the project will construct five roundabouts in the Village area (Tampico/Bermudas, Tampico/Desert Club, Tampico/Eisenhower, Eisenhower/Montezuma and Bermudas/52 Sinaloa). Phase 1 is anticipated to begin in June along Calle Tampico. This project will include landscaping improvements and will reduce Calle Tampico, Calle Sinaloa/Avenue 52 and Eisenhower Drive from four lanes to two. The City will install additional drainage infrastructure as part of this project to further alleviate flooding that occurs in the Village. Also expected to begin in June, the Dune Palms Road Widening Project will increase Dune Palms Road from two to four lanes from Black Hawk Way to the northern approach of the future Dune Palms bridge.
The 2018/19 Pavement Management Plan (PMP) improvements include more than 245,000 square feet of pavement rehabilitation on Avenue 52 between SilverRock Way and Jefferson Street. The project will grind the existing pavement, install a new layer of pavement, and include minor pothole hole repair and striping improvements on Blackhawk Way. Look for this to begin in May and be completed by July.
